![]() A jade rabbit, who manufactured elixirs, as well as the woodcutter Wu Gang, also lived on the moon. While she became lonely on the moon without her husband, she did have company. Chang'e kept on floating until she landed on the moon. Although Houyi wanted to shoot her down in order to prevent her from floating further, he could not bear to aim the arrow at her. She started to float into the sky because of the overdose. ![]() Nervous that Houyi would catch her discovering the contents of the case, she accidentally swallowed the entire pill. Like Pandora in Greek mythology, Chang'e became too curious she opened up the case and found the pill just as Houyi was returning home. He warned Chang'e not to open the case and then left home for a while. Houyi brought the pill home and stored it in a case. At the end of his quest he met the Queen Mother of the West who rewarded him with a pill for his heroic deeds of saving the realm from the scorching suns, but warned him that each person would only need half the pill to become immortal. Seeing that Chang'e felt extremely miserable over her loss of immortality, Houyi decided to journey on a long, perilous quest to find the pill of immortality so that the couple could be immortals again. Houyi, using his legendary archery skills, shot down nine of the sons, but spared one son to be the sun. As you may know already, there are three myths regarding this festival. ![]() Look into any good Chinese calendar and you will find that one of the days is called Mid-Autumn Festival. Wish me luck in pulling this off.The name of this story in Chinese is 后羿射日, or 嫦娥奔月. If I can find those Nerf archery sets I think it would be fun to put up some helium balloons and let the kids fire Nerf arrows at them. I remember from when I was in elementary school how to make simple Chinese lanterns out of construction paper. And perhaps, to bring some cultural awareness to our community. I thought it would be great for families of Chinese descent (who otherwise might feel isolated and alone) to experience a community honoring their traditions in wonderful surroundings. I have great dreams for this but no idea how it will actually turn out. “Mid-Autumn Mooncakes on the Mountain” is what I have named this event. It is a spectacular view with city lights twinkling around the lake. Many people go up there in the evenings just for the view. Next, you see the Lighthouse Roadside Restaurant (closed in the evenings) with a HUGE parking lot that overlooks the whole valley. Just outside of our town, on the road that goes across the Ortega Mountains from Lake Elsinore to Orange County, the road begins with a steep upward climb. I decided to schedule a special Meet-up on Mid-Autumn Festival and then expanded the idea of opening it to anyone in the community. ![]() It seemed to me like the kids were more excited about the mooncakes than they were in Chinese New Year. I remembered how much the kids loved and talked about mooncakes last year. Within local groups of teachers, we have Meet-ups. ![]() Thank you so much for this!!!! I desperately needed to be able to make these myself because I could never afford to make enough to do what I want to do. ![]()
